Cruel Intentions is a 1999 American teen romantic scandal film. The film was directed by Roger Kumble and stars Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Selma Blair, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Kristin Chenoweth. Directed by Roger Kumble of Legally Blonde fame (the movie spawned three sequels) with an all-star cast including Reese Witherspoon at the beginning of her breakout career; Selma Blair early in her controversial career (before she became obsessed with witchcraft), Sarah Michelle Gellar who created Buffy Summers; Ryan Phillippe on the verge of superstardom; and Kristin Chenoweth just before she took over Broadway. It was a film that would end up helping all of these actors to become superstar actors. In the film, Jennifer Rush (Reese Witherspoon) is a sweet girl from a strict family. She has been given over to her older sister Kristina (Kristin Chenoweth) as her guardian after their parents died in a tragic accident. Kristina has been groomed for the role of head of the household since childhood and becomes one with her authority by making Jennifer's life unbearable, especially when she comes home with poor grades, bringing home boyfriends who are not good enough for the Rush sisters, or even bringing her completely different boyfriends out to meet their family. Jennifer's life is changed for the worse when her boyfriend, Cal (Ryan Phillippe), tells her that he has taken back his commitment to their relationship. Unbeknownst to Jennifer, Cal's best friend Sebastian (Benjamin Bratt) is actually behind all of her problems. Everyone in their social circle has agreed that she cannot be trusted with men; it is only a matter of time before their male friends see how bad they are for Sebastian and start to reject Jennifer. Andrea Bowen was originally cast as Kristina but had to drop out due to scheduling issues on "Baywatch". At the time, the film was one of the most expensive R-rated films ever made, costing almost $18 million. The budget eventually soared to $25.6 million. It was considered a commercial failure, taking in just over $6 million worldwide against its production costs, although it gained a cult following upon its release on DVD and VHS. Reese Witherspoon's portrayal of Jennifer Rush also earned her two nominations at the 22nd Annual Young Artist Awards ceremony for Best Leading Young Actress in a Feature Film and Best performance in a Feature Film - Supporting Young Actress (Witherspoon). The film's title is a reference to the novel "Cruel Intentions" by Roger Kumble. Cruel Intentions was released on DVD on March 29, 2003. An almost exact remake was released in 2015 as "Clueless", which is a modern-day update of the plotline from Cruel Intentions. In this version, Alicia Silverstone as a high school student with two wealthy snobs as parents who try to force her to date unsuitable men who would bring her nothing but misery, while she falls for one of those men. cfa1e77820
